(Los Angeles)

When do most women ovulate? Books say day 7 - 14 of the menstrual cycle is the best time for couples to try to conceive. Is that right?

What is the best time to conceive?
by: Maria

There are a few things you will want to take care of before you conceive, so let's start there. Be sure your partner is onboard; it really takes two active parents to effectively raise a child.

It's true that accidents do occur, but in an ideal situation your baby will benefit from a two parent relationship. You must consider all of the changes that will take place in your life during the pregnancy and for the 20 to 30 years that you will be raising your child.

If you are ready to make this kind of commitment after careful consideration, we can move on to conception.

The best time to conceive differs for each woman. Ovulation has no outward symptoms. Generally ovulation occurs 14 days before your menstrual cycle begins.

Purchasing a basal body temperature thermometer may help you track your body's ovulation, and they are available at most drug stores.

Women who have very regular menstrual periods will have an easier time figuring out their best time to be tracking it on a calendar.

Women who do not have regular menstrual cycles will have a more difficult time trying to track their ovulation cycles.

There are now ovulation kits available over the counter, which are helpful in finding your most likely day for ovulation.

After ovulation occurs, your egg will survive for approximately 24 hours. Since a man's sperm can survive for several days, it would be beneficial to have sexual intercourse just prior to ovulation.

Increasing the amount of times you have sex just prior to and during ovulation increases your chances of conception even more.

It depends on each woman's cycle. Some women have a 28 day cycle and their most fertile days are probably from day 10 to day 18 or around there.

Some people claim they simply figure out what day would be approximately two weeks before their usual period would begin, and that is the start of their fertile time.

One good way to know is to use a basal body temperature thermometer. Keep track of your temperature and over time you will know when your are ovulating. When you see your temp dip and then go up a bit you are starting to ovulate, so the thermometer tells you when it is the best time to conceive.
