Bleeding between periods?

by Stacey
(Scotland)

I am sexually active and had my period which lasted 5 days. Then a week and a bit later I got a bleed again and it lasted one day. I had sex before my first period and it was unprotected. Could I be pregnant?

Causes of spotting and bleeding
by: Hannah

Spotting or bleeding between periods can be kind of scary. But there are some simple reasons it may happen. One reason could be ovulation and if this is the reason it is perfectly normal.

Another normal reason could be implantation bleeding. That is when you become pregnant and there is an implantation into the uterus which will cause some bleeding and spotting.

If you have recently gone through an extra stressful time, or done some heavy physical activity or exercise, those can also be factors.

Another possible cause is when hormones might have fluctuated, which can be caused by forgetting to take birth control pills, or if you stop or start the pills.

Some people believe that a few plant foods also have mild estrogen-like activity, such as soy and flax seed. So if you are consuming too much of those in your meals it is possible that it might mimic estrogen and cause slight hormone fluctuations. If you are not going through menopause, and you are consuming soy milk, you might want to try rice milk instead.

Taking too much aspirin, which can act as a blood thinner, might also contribute to bleeding between periods in some individuals.

Sometimes after long-term use of a particular birth control pill, there can be some in-between spotting or bleeding. It may be time to try another kind of pill.

It is always best to talk to a doctor about what is happening and get expert advice on your individual situation. Hope that helps put your mind at ease a little bit.
