Breastfeeding and Birth Control

Okay I just had my son three months ago and I'm still breastfeeding. I had a period on the usual day last month but now this month I'm nine days late. Could I be pregnant or could it just be because I'm breastfeeding. I'm also on birth control pills.

Probably not pregnant
by: Debbie

Hi, I'm thinking you are probably not pregnant.

You are breastfeeding -and- you are on the pill, so both of those should help prevent pregnancy. Yes breastfeeding does helps some - the same hormones that help your body produce milk also help suppress ovulation - but it is not foolproof. You could still manage to get pregnant, so that is why your doctor has you on a pill that is safe for breastfeeding moms. It is probably the "mini pill." That one does not have a lot of hormones in it, so there is a little higher odds of getting pregnant while on it. But the combination of breastfeeding and the mini pill usually provide enough protection for most moms.

Meanwhile, why is your period late? My guess is it is because you were not taking the pill all through the nine months of pregnancy and now you have started it again for a few months. That can cause a bit of an irregular period here and there while your body gets adjusted to things. But I'm not a doctor and I don't even play one on TV so be sure to call yours and ask him or her about this. Best wishes to you and your new baby :)
