Having a period while pregnant?

I am still having my period even though I'm pregnant. Is there a problem having a period while pregnant?

I'm confused
by: Anonymous

I'm always very regular in my monthly cycle.
But now I was late for over 8 days, and then my mensus came but for only 1 day. I'm experiencing back aches, always very tired and I've been having a higher body temperature for the past week. I'm also having muscle cramps. Can anyone help?

It is probably not actually a period

When a woman is pregnant, her ovaries stop ovulating eggs, which would otherwise become the source of the monthly flow. So technically there could not be a period during pregnancy.

However, some women could be experiencing vaginal bleeding instead. Often, vaginal bleeding during pregnancy is mistaken for having a period.

It could be caused by the major hormonal changes a woman goes through during pregnancy.

Another cause for bleeding during pregnancy is implantation bleeding. It takes place when the embryo starts to attach itself to the lining or wall of the uterus.

Implantation bleeding is typical in early pregnancy. It is often seen about five days after conception. However, implantation bleeding is usually not more than spotting, it is not like a monthly menstrual cycle.

So although many women feel they are having a period while being pregnant, it is not actually possible to have menstruation while being pregnant at the same time. The bleeding is caused by vaginal bleeding, hormone changes, implantation, or something else. Be sure to talk to your doctor about it.
