7 Morning Sickness Remedies

Morning sickness is a common problem experienced in early pregnancy. While not every woman will suffer from it, many do. You may also find that even though you've never had morning sickness in previous pregnancies, you can suddenly develop it. If you're feeling queasy and want relief, here are seven morning sickness remedies to help.

1. Pay attention to where you sleep and how. Get enough rest, and don't sleep in very warm places, since they can make you more nauseated. Since pregnancy requires a lot of energy, take naps during the day.

Also, get out of bed slowly in the morning, and eat a bland food like dry, unsweetened cereal or crackers before you get up or as soon as you do.

2. Smells can often trigger morning sickness, which doesn't always have to happen in the morning. When you're cooking, open the windows and turn on exhaust fans. Pay attention to odors after meals, too. Cooking in the microwave may make fewer smells.

You may also want to carry a handkerchief with a few drops of a good smelling oil. That way, if there's a triggering smell that you can't get away with, you can breathe through the handkerchief.

3. Watch what you eat. Nausea and heartburn are often caused by greasy and spicy foods, so avoid them. Even smelling them can cause some problems. If you have trouble getting through a meal without feeling ill, try eating something salty at the beginning.

Avoid drinking fluid with the meal to reduce feelings of nausea, too. Cold food is less likely to have a strong smell, and might be easier to eat.

4. Pay attention to your body. That means eating what you want, when you want it. Cravings are your body's way of telling you what you need at the moment. They'll help you avoid feelings of illness.

5. You may also wish to learn to "graze". Small, frequent meals are often better for reducing nausea in early pregnancy than a more conventional eating schedule. Eat snacks that are high in protein on a regular basis, like low fat meats, eggs, nuts, and beans.

6. Consider mild nausea remedies. Peppermint and ginger, especially in tea form, can make your symptoms go away or become less noticeable.

7. Pay attention to the supplements you're taking and when. Take prenatal vitamins later in the day, instead of when you first get up. You can also talk to your doctor about taking vitamin B6 or ginger to help alleviate nausea, one of the most common pregnancy symptoms of the many that you might have during pregnancy.

Iron and other vitamins can make nausea occur if taken on an empty stomach, so if you're having a lot of problems, talk to your doctor about what food to take these with, maybe some milk or along with a creamy hot cereal like Cream of Wheat. You and your doctor can figure out the best supplement regimen together.

By paying attention to your body and being willing to vary your lifestyle, you can get a lot of relief from your morning sickness. While it's hard to avoid nausea completely, changing how you eat and sleep can make things a lot better.
