When you take a home pregnancy test, it checks for HCG hormone in your urine.

This hormone is only present when a woman is pregnant. However, while today?s home pregnancy tests are much better than ones even just a few years ago, they do have their limitations.

For example, in order for most home pregnancy tests to have a positive result, you need to test after you have missed your period.

The most sensitive home pregnancy tests are designed to read the lowest levels of the HCG hormone.

In laboratory testing, 97% of pregnant women will get a positive pregnancy test after the first day of their missed period.

The tests that provide results up to five days earlier include Clear Blue Easy and the EPT home pregnancy test.

However, the percentages are fairly low for five days beforehand. Only 52% of women had a positive pregnancy test five days before their period is due.

Consumer Reports listed First Response as the most reliable. Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test came in second and EPT was third.

Some women produce lower levels of HCG than others. However, levels tend to double each day you are pregnant.

If you believe you are pregnant, you may want to visit your doctor for a blood pregnancy test.
These tests can be much more sensitive than a home pregnancy test.
