Pre Menopause Periods?

by Terry

I am about to turn 45 and have on a few occasions experienced some pre-menopause symptoms. The first time was 6 years ago, and I believe stress brought that on early. Then it went away until this year.

I have had 2 cycles (not heavy) per month a couple of times this year and once where I did not have a cycle at all for a little over 2 months and then I cycled for 2 weeks. That is unusual for me because my norm for 25 years has been 24 to 48 hours.

My question is this: I have not cycled in over 3 months now... is this one of the normal pre-menopause symptoms? Because most of what I can find is about women having a lot of flow versus having a little or none.

Pre-menopause menstrual cycles
by: Cindy

One of the normal pre-menopause symptoms is to start having irregular periods in your menstrual cycle. Each woman is different and the cycles can become lighter or heavier, shorter or longer. There can be some skipped periods or even an extra one in-between the usual cycles that have previously been the routine.

Menstruation cycles are related to ovulation cycles and hormonal cycles. As a woman's body starts changing during peri-menopause, the estrogen hormones are changing. These hormonal changes have an effect upon ovulation. If your body skips a month of ovulation then naturally it could also skip a month of menstruation. Or you could simply have some type of different menstruation than you usually would if you'd had your usual ovulation that month.

Irregular ovulation is normal in pre-menopause and so are the resulting irregular periods. The frustrating part is that each woman has a different experience so you never know what to expect. Heavier menstruation, lighter, shorter, longer, etc. are all possible. These pre-menopausal periods are no fun, but they are a part of life. Eventually a woman will stop ovulating all together and then her periods will stop happening.

It's all about the hormones, mainly estrogen. Hormone changes are the main causes of early menopause. As the hormone levels begin changing, your body is starting to say something like, "Hmmmm, okay maybe the child-bearing time is almost passed now, so I guess I don't need to keep doing this ovulation thing every month."

So your pre-menopause menstrual cycle seems to fit right in with what you would expect to be happening.

Changes in Periods
by: Anonymous

I'm a 46 year old woman and I'm starting to see changes in my periods. I've been having a period for the last 3 weeks and I'm wondering if this is normal. I have been seeing a change in my schedule in the last 9 months. Should I be concerned having this period for this long or is this normal for a woman my age?
