What is a good, balanced pregnancy diet plan for a woman who is 22 yrs old and is 7 weeks along in her pregnancy? What foods are best for my baby and me? I know to avoid alcohol. And I'm taking my prenatal vitamins. But what foods are helpful?

Diet Plan

If you are pregnant, it is important that you eat the right foods in order to properly nourish the baby growing inside you.

Here are some suggestions for a safe and healthy diet plan.

In the first three months, it can be difficult to eat, especially when morning sickness is an issue. At this time, it can be good to try and eat small meals throughout the day since nausea can be worse when you are very hungry.

Avoid greasy foods and take prenatal vitamins. If you feel like you are losing a lot of weight, speak to a doctor about help for morning sickness.

In the second three months, you will likely feel great and start to eat more. Morning sickness will usually be gone and you can start to eat much more easily.

Make sure to eat a variety of foods but avoid soft cheeses and some fish (because of mercury contamination). Fish oil capsules are better than fish. Eating a well-balanced diet that includes meat, vegetables, fruits and bread products can be the key to staying healthy.

In the final three months, you can continue to eat but don?t feel like you need to eat for two. This can cause you to gain a lot of unnecessary weight that may be hard to lose after you give birth.

You may gain a lot of weight during the last few weeks and months since this is when the baby has finished developing and is beginning to put on body weight of its own. A total weight gain of twenty to thirty pounds is healthy in most cases.

Your doctor may be able to give you more specific advice and help you monitor your food intake during routine prenatal visits.
